Financial challenges facing Multi-Academy Trusts

The MAT financial balancing act

While MATs grapple with complex financial challenges, many continue to allocate precious resources to outdated administrative processes that drain time and money.

After two decades of working closely with schools across the UK, I've witnessed firsthand the growing financial pressures that Multi-Academy Trusts (MATs) face.

The recent report from Darlington highlighting these challenges resonates deeply with what I see daily in my conversations with school leaders and trust executives.

Working with hundreds of schools throughout my career, I've observed a concerning pattern: whilst MATs grapple with complex financial challenges, many continue allocating precious resources to outdated administrative processes that drain time and money.

The Department for Education has made commendable efforts to support schools through tools like "View My Financial Insights" and school resource benchmarking. However, from my regular interactions with school leaders, I know that many trusts still struggle with cumulative deficits and face the daunting task of implementing financial recovery plans within increasingly tight timeframes.

Meet Daniel Neeld.

Managing Director - Medical Tracker

Daniel has nearly two decades of experience driving innovation and operational excellence in the education sector. Known for his strategic vision and expertise in digital transformation, Daniel has led impactful initiatives that enhance outcomes for educational organisations worldwide.
A dynamic collaborator, he excels in building high-performing teams and fostering partnerships that address complex challenges, from inclusion to safeguarding. Passionate about empowering schools, Daniel works closely with policymakers and educators to deliver sustainable solutions that shape the future of learning. His forward-thinking approach continues to set benchmarks in global education leadership.

What particularly concerns me is seeing schools maintain paper-based systems for critical operations like medical incident tracking. Beyond the direct costs of paper and printing supplies, the real expense extends into areas many trusts haven't fully quantified - storage space, filing systems, and, most importantly, staff time.

The hidden risks and costs

Throughout my career in education technology, I've seen countless instances where staff spend hours manually documenting and filing incidents, time that could be better spent supporting pupils.

The risk of misplaced records, data protection breaches, and delayed access to critical medical information creates additional hidden costs that significantly impact a school's budget.

At Medical Tracker, we're committed to helping schools address these operational inefficiencies. My role as Managing Director has given me unique insights into how digital transformation can significantly impact a school's financial health. We're currently gathering data on cost savings, but the immediate benefits we see include:

➡️ Reduced administrative burden.

➡️ Improved accuracy in incident reporting.

➡️ Better compliance with regulatory requirements.

Where does this leave us?

I believe the education sector stands at a crucial junction.

While the financial challenges facing MATs are substantial, they also present an opportunity to reassess and modernise operational processes. The initial investment in digital systems might seem challenging when budgets are tight, but continuing with inefficient paper-based systems often proves more expensive in the long run.

I encourage trust leaders and school administrators to evaluate their current processes critically.

- How much time does your staff spend on paper-based medical tracking?

- What are the hidden costs of your current system?

As someone who has worked in this sector for over twenty years, I'm always keen to hear your experiences and perspectives on these challenges.

Let's continue this important conversation about building more financially sustainable schools through operational innovation. Your insights and experiences are crucial in shaping solutions that work for everyone in our education community.
